WHS Bulldogs Defeat Brenham Cubs and Head to
Playoffs
The Waller High School Varsity Bulldogs beat the
Brenham Cubs 15-14 Friday night at Waller ISD
Stadium. The Cubs entered the contest as
the
states’ #10 ranked 4A
team. The win gives Waller a 4-0 finish to the
regular season and qualifies them for the Texas High
School Football Playoffs.
Defensively, the Bulldogs played outstanding.
This has turned into one
of the best defensive units in Waller in recent
memory. In
Waller’s four wins, the defense has given up 36
points, an average of nine points per game.
The Cubs were limited to
38 rushing yards
on 27 carries and
had 144 yards passing. Miller Pierce had a timely
interception that led to the Bulldogs score in the 4th
quarter to take the
lead. Jacobie White, Jordan Hamilton, Darius Nash,
Jordan Gooden, Trent
Rape and Jordan
Ondijo played on the Cubs side of the line of
scrimmage most of the evening. While they did not
sack the quarterback, they hurried him and knocked
him down on multiple occasions
and forced him to throw
when he was not ready. BJ Kwiatkowski, David McDade,
and Keith White wreaked havoc against the Cub
running game. Miller Pierce, Chad Madden, Christ
Tompkins, Matthew Pierce, Jyrin Broussard, and Kalyn
Utz played well
in the secondary, containing the Cub passing
attack. Madden had several solid hits on Cub
receivers to stop them in their tracks. The only
score the Bulldog defense gave up came on a 10 yard
pass after the Cubs had recovered a fumbled snap on
a punt at the Bulldog 10 yard line.
Offensively, Miller
Pierce led the way against an outstanding Cub
defense. The
Bulldogs racked up 302 yards against a Cub defense
that was previously only giving up 172 per game
through nine games.
Will Garcia got the
scoring started for the Bulldogs with a 24 yard
field goal.
Pierce ran for
236 yards rushing on 17
carries and had two touchdowns in the 4th
quarter. Glen
Gilliam had 34 yards on 8 carries. Chris Carroll
had 32 yards on
12 carries. Up
front, Pat Villareal, Jason Lafferty, Sean Mangum,
Matt Leviner, Alex McFaddin, and Glenn Hill locked
on a bruising Cub defensive front and paved holes
all night. Most of the
Bulldogs yardage came
right through the heart of the Cub defense.
Austin Tilton, Frank
Folger, Christ
Tompkins, Greg Allen, and Mikhail Drake blocked well
on the perimeter turning
short gains into big
gains.
The Bulldogs have great momentum heading into
the playoffs. After starting 0-6, they are 4-0 in
their last four ballgames.
They will face the
Lockhart Lions in El Campo on Friday night at 7:30.
