4th graders
at FSE help save the world
Every month students in Todd
Nesloney and Kathy French’s fourth grade classes at Waller ISD’s Fields
Store Elementary (FSE) work on a service project. During the month of
February, the combined classes, with out the help of their teachers,
decided to do a recycling project after learning about pollution and
global warming and its affects on the world in science lessons.
These impressive fourth graders discussed in depth everything they
would need to successfully conduct a recycling project at their school.
They started with internet research and found that some paper, aluminum,
plastic, and glass products can be recycled. Aluminum and plastics must
be rinsed, aluminum cans must be crushed, and plastic products must have
a “1” or “2” inside a recycling stamp which can be found on the bottom
of most bottles. As it is breakable, the students decided against
collecting glass for their project.
Working together, the students decided they would need bins with
labels on them the collect the goods and discussed where the best
locations would be to place them. Online they found the Brenham
Recycling Center, where Nesloney agreed to “cash in” what they collected
for money when they told him they wanted to donate what they raised to a
local charity or one that helps kids.
To advertise their project, they decided to create flyers, posters,
and even film commercials which would run on campus-wide televisions
during morning announcements. To make sure they wouldn’t miss anything
as they organized their project, they invited students involved in
Waller High School’s Project Earth, another recycling project, to come
talk to them about their experience with recycling. FSE students deemed
those involved in WHS’ Project Earth “role models for recycling.” The
high school students taught their peers about how pollution is killing
animals such as dolphins and polar bears, and gave them recycling tips
such as, not crumbling paper, lying if flat so more will fit in a bin.
When Nesloney and French’s students completed their proposal, they
then selected four students; Oscar Jasso, Misty Skulsky, Josh Moellers,
and Sarah Springer; to present it to FSE Principal Amy Lacey for
approval to implement.
“I was very impressed with what they had to say, and how well they
thought out the entire project. I was so proud when they told me they
had done it with out the help of their teachers,” Lacey said, and of
course she approved the project.
“Just because we’re kids doesn’t mean we can’t make a difference,”
one student said, “Every little bit helps.”
“Before I don’t think we really thought about pollution or what it
is doing to our planet; global warming and killing polar bears,” said
another.
The project just wrapped up at FSE and the amount they raised has
not yet been tallied, but the project was absolutely a success. Nesloney
and French certainly have a group of students they are very proud of.
These fourth graders want to tell the world, recycling is your
chance to be a hero. For more information on how you can help. Contact
