Waller ISD says ‘Goodbye’ to Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jim Phillips

After 18 years of service, Waller ISD will lose athletic director and head football coach Jim Phillips as he has accepted the position as athletic director and head football coach in Greenville ISD (northeast of Dallas/Fort Worth).
“I have had the pleasure to coach with and work with Jim for almost 20 years and he has one of the best ‘hearts’ for kids I have ever seen. He has a genuine love for the kids and a passion for helping others. His big heart shows in the manner in which he serves others on a daily basis. I am proud to have served others with him,” WISD Assistant Superintendent Danny Twardowski said.
When Phillips came to WISD in 1991, he took on a program that had previously been 0-10. Since then, he has led the Bulldogs to the playoffs 11 times and over 45 Bulldogs have earned athletics scholarships. Under his direction the Bulldogs have an overall winning record of 103-84. Phillips was named 18-4A Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. Most notably, he led the 2007 team to the quarterfinals.
“We will deeply miss Coach Phillips, but we wish him the best in Greenville,” WISD Superintendent Richard McReavy said.
Taking the position also allows Phillips to be closer to two of his sons. Jason, a 2004 graduate of Waller High School (WHS), is now a senior all-conference linebacker and Dick Butkus award nominee at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and Jeremy, senior WHS star quarterback, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of North Texas in Denton (north of Dallas/Fort Worth) in the fall.
“I am lucky to have worked with Coach Phillips.  He is a quality person that has had a positive impact on the lives of many students and athletes at Waller High School. Coach Phillip’s connection to our community and the relationships he had with our students and staff will be missed,” WHS Principal Kelly Baehren said.
The community is invited to join Waller ISD to recognize and celebrate Phillips Monday, March 31 at 3 p.m. in the cafeteria at WHS. Cake, cookies, and punch will be served.
Waller ISD began searching for a new athletic director and head football coach March 7 and will take applications until the position is filled.
