WISD FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT SCHOOL MEAL PROGRAM

It is the goal of the Waller Independent School District Food Service Department to prepare and serve nutritious meals to all children in Waller ISD regardless of economic status. We sincerely hope this web page will answer any questions parents may have regarding the meal plans available to students.

NUTRIENT STANDARDS OF MEALS

Today’s school breakfast and lunch are both designed to meet stringent national and state nutrition standards. These nutritional guidelines require that school meals provide specific amounts of calories, protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, and calcium. In addition, meals are lower in sodium and cholesterol and higher in fiber than in the past. Total fat calories are to average 30% or less over a period of a week. The Food Service Director plans the menu to meet these standards.

MEALS OFFERED

Breakfast and lunch are offered daily at each school. Elementary and middle schools are offered several entrée choices for each lunch service, along with nutritious a la carte drink and snack items.

Our Junior High Cafeterias  have  three serving lines with different themes.

Home Plate (WJH) and Mainstreet Cafe (SJH) – Serves a traditional hot lunch and daily specials.

Short Stop (WJH) and Movie Box Office (SJH)– Serves hot sandwich baskets and packaged items.

Dugout Deli (WJH) and Sandwich Shack (SJH) – Serves made-to-order sub sandwiches, baked potatoes and salad plates.

WHS cafeteria has a similar selection.

Hot Line Diner – Serves a traditional hot lunch and daily specials.

Deli Delights – Serves made-to-order sub sandwiches, baked potatoes and nachos.

Bulldog Bakery – Fresh daily soup and specials, salad plates, and Otis Spunkmeyer baked goods.

E.Z. Express – Serves a variety of burgers, pizza, and snack items.
Chick'n Pick'ns – Variety of chicken sandwich/chicken entree baskets and sandwich wraps.

MEAL PRICES

For the 2009-2010 School Year, breakfast is $1.00 at all schools. The price for an elementary student lunch is $1.75, and a secondary school lunch is $2.00.  USDA regulations require that adult servings be no more than those portions served to secondary students. We choose to serve the secondary portion size district wide. Adult meal prices are higher because there is no food commodity or federal reimbursement given for adult meals. Adult meal prices are $1.50 for breakfast and $2.75  for lunch.

PAYMENT PROCEDURES

Money may be deposited into student accounts with cash/check/online payment or brought to school on days of purchase. Advanced payment is not necessary. However, this process is convenient for parents, and a child is always insured of a nutritious cafeteria breakfast and lunch. Contact either your school cafeteria manager or the Food Service Department for information or questions regarding the above payment procedures.

STUDENT CHARGES

Students may charge up to the value of two breakfasts and two lunches ($5.50 PK-4th, $6.00 5th-12th). A computerized letter is sent home when a negative balance appears on a student’s account. If a student reaches the charge limit, a substitute meal is provided until the negative balance is paid.

FREE/REDUCED MEAL PROGRAM

At the beginning of each school year, students are provided an application for participation in the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch program. Parents are encouraged to complete a free or reduced meal application if economic hardships exist. Applications expire each year and are not district transferable. A new application must be turned in each year to determine if benefits are required. Eligibility decisions are based on federally established income and household size guidelines without regard to race, sex, color, national origin, age, or disability.

Did you know…

  • The WISD Food Service Department serves approximately 4,000 lunches, 1,500 breakfasts and 400 after school snacks each day.

  • Our staff of 50 is distributed among our 8 school cafeterias.

  • Our breakfast and lunch menus, price lists, staff email, and nutritional links are posted on the district web site.

  • The WISD program is one of less than half of the food service programs across the state that are entirely self-supporting, including salaries. Its sources of income are federal funds, paid student meals, a la carte sales, and adult meals. The program receives no local tax funds (no operational funds from the district). The only school district funds the department receives are for the construction of a cafeteria when a new school is built.

Students perform better in school when they enjoy nutritious meals.

Eat a variety of food:

  • 6-11 servings of grains

  • 3-5 servings of vegetable

  • 2-4 servings of fruit

  • 2-3 servings of milk

  • 2-3 servings of meat

Choose sparingly those foods that provide few nutrients and that are high in fat and sugar.

Cafeteria managers can be contacted by email or campus phone number.
