Acronyms, Abbreviations & Terms
Acronyms are used in the world of education and throughout Waller ISD. Acronyms should be spelled out on first reference, especially in letters and publications. The full name should be written on first reference and can be followed by the acronym in parenthesis. Subsequent references after the first reference can use the acronym.
For example: The University Interscholastic League (UIL) first reference exists to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. The UIL subsequent reference was created by The University of Texas at Austin in 1910 and has grown into the largest inter-school organization of its kind in the world.
Exceptions to the rule include well-known acronyms such as U.S., SAT, and ACT.
