The award-winning WHS UIL Academic Team offers motivated students the opportunity to pursue their academic interests outside of class in a fun, friendly, yet competitive environment. From October through March, the team travels to invitational meets throughout the Houston, Austin, and San Antonio areas, giving Waller students the chance to challenge other top-notch students as they prepare for the UIL-Sanctioned contests each spring. UIL sponsors three contests each spring: district, regional, and state. Students who place in the top 3 spots OR are members of the first place team in each event qualify to advance to the next level of competition.
UIL Academics teaches students study skills, test-taking strategies, and team building skills. Students work individually as well as part of a team as they compete at various invitational and UIL-Sponsored contests throughout the year. They earn individual awards such as medals, ribbons, and trophies, and their participation can also help them earn scholarships. UIL Academics looks great on college applications.
Students may choose to compete in: Accounting, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Copy Editing, Current Issues & Events, Editorial Writing, Essay Writing, Feature Writing, Film, Headline Writing, Informative Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Literary Criticism, Math, News Writing, Number Sense, One Act Play, Persuasive Speaking, Poetry, Prose, Ready Writing, Robotics, Science, Social Studies, Spelling & Vocabulary, and Technical Theatre.
