District Overview
Waller Independent School District (WISD) was established in 1887 and is one of the largest school districts in the greater Houston area encompassing 328 square miles. It is located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Houston on Highway 290 and is one the the area’s fastest-growing public school districts. It neighbors Cypress-Fairbanks, Katy, Tomball, Magnolia, Navasota, Hempstead, and Royal ISD.
While WISD is rapidly growing, the district keeps its strong commitment to family and community. WISD believes teamwork and collaboration amongst its staff, parents, family members, and the community is key to helping all students achieve their highest aspirations. The district approaches education and serving student needs with a “whatever it takes because our kids deserve greatness” mindset. Personalized learning opportunities for all students, innovation, and outside-the-box thinking are hallmarks of WISD.
Known for its commitment to all-around excellence, WISD offers 1:1 student technology districtwide. It is home to one of Texas’ only comprehensive high schools (grades 9-12) that offers more than 40 hours of free dual-credit college courses and over 90 career and technical education (CTE) courses in over 22 programs of study during the normal high school schedule all on the same high school site. CTE programming includes, but is not limited to culinary, cosmetology, welding, health science, business, marketing, and finance. Junior high schools (grades 6-8) offer a wide variety of academics, fine arts, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities. Elementary schools (prekindergarten-grade 5) also offer academic and extracurricular opportunities as well as specials rotations in library, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), music, and physical education.
Students compete in conference 6A UIL academic and athletic competitions. In 2022-2023, they earned state and national awards in academic, athletic, culinary, drone, robotics, fine arts, FFA, and Air Force JROTC.
The district approaches its rapid enrollment growth with a long-range strategic plan designed to best serve the needs of students and families while remaining good stewards of taxpayer dollars. Although the district is building, WISD’s tax rates have been steady or lowered for more than a decade and the district maintains a transparency star in traditional finances.
