Medication at School

All medication must be brought to the clinic by a parent/guardian. Medication will be secured in the clinic at all times. When possible, medications should be given outside of school hours.

School nurses and other school employees designated by the superintendent are allowed to administer medication in compliance with physicians' orders to students during school hours under the following conditions:

 

  • Medications will only be administered when accompanied by a signed physician's order (or healthcare provider with prescriptive authority in the State of Texas) and written request by the parent/guardian
  • Medications must be FDA approved and in the original container properly labeled with the child's name, name of medicine and directions for time and dosage. When applicable, packaging must be unopened, sealed and not expired
  • The nurse has the right to contact the physician regarding clarification of the medication order for the student and/or the right to refuse administration of medications or treatments if it conflicts with their professional judgment
  • When the period for administering the medication expires, the medication must be picked up by the parent/guardian. For the safety and protection of all students, medication will not be sent home with students nor will they be stored over summer months. Medications not picked up by the designated time will be disposed of properly
  • Students will not be allowed to carry or transport medications except for emergency medications with the proper documentation on file with your school nurse
  • Emergency Medications
    • Only medications for possible life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and severe allergies may be carried by the responsible student at school. This requires appropriate documentation and a permission form signed by the treating physician, the parent/guardian, and the student. The student must be capable of administering his/her own medication or treatment at school and at school-related activities according to the purpose, appropriate method, and frequency of the medication or treatment. The student also must understand that intentional misuse or sharing of any medication or medical equipment that could cause harm to another person will result in disciplinary action.
