Word Problem Strategies

Thinking through how to solve mathematical word problems is important for student’s comprehension of math.

UPSCheck Strategy

Teach students how to use a thinking process to help with word problems.  Students need to understand the math problem before they can successfully solve it.  Students should continuously use this process throughout the school year, so that they can independently use it.  This process is called the UPSCheck strategy.  Students will understand what the question is asking them, plan out the tools they will need to solve the problem, solve the problem, and check their work.
