McReavy Elementary’s speech/language program is similar to most other schools. Children with suspected communication impairments are referred by teachers, parents, or other professionals in the community. A series of classroom interventions take place, and if these are not effective, the child may be tested by the speech pathologist. Testing may include instruments to gauge the child’s ability to produce sounds correctly, to speak fluently and without detracting vocal qualities, and to comprehend and express thoughts in an orderly and grammatical fashion.
Children qualify by meeting the state standards for eligibility and then are provided speech-language therapy services as part of their school day.
Children are evaluated as young as 3 years of age by the speech-language pathologist and educational diagnostician for a variety of disability areas such as intellectual disabilities, autism and speech impairments. If qualified, the child may receive ‘drop-in’ services such as speech therapy, which is conducted at the child’s home school. These children do not attend other classes. They may potentially also be served in an early childhood special education program known as ECSE.
