Waller JH Wins in UIL One-Act Play

WJH One-Act PlayWhen Waller Junior High (WJH) Theater students performed in this year’s UIL One-Act Play competition they brought home several honors. They presented two plays in the competition: Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling and The Nerd by Larry Shue, and earned 11 individual awards and three team awards. Under the guidance of teacher Gwen Waller, the students designed, rehearsed, and perfected their shows in less than 25 days. 

The cast of Steel Magnolias included Lilly Bluhm, Abigail Bookout, Julissa Estupinian, Savannah Ireland, Slade Brewer, Nelly Lopez, Gabby Pico, Shanna Uy, and Michaela Williams. Bookout was awarded All-Star Cast for her portrayal of M’lynn, Uy won Honorable Mention All-Star Cast for her character Annelle, and Williams won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ouiser. The stage crew members were Slade Brewer, MacKenzie Lane, Julissa Estupinian, Savannah Ireland, Connor Lamar, and Gaby Pico. They won Best Stage Crew and Brewer won the Best Tech Award. 

The cast of The Nerd included Grant Allwein, Riliegh Guerro, Kaleb Keilers, Ty Sollis, Raven Russell, Marcos Saucedo, and Russell Beyer. For their character portrayals, Guerro and Keilers won All-Star Cast, Sollis and Russel won Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Beyer received Best Actor for the character of Rick Steadman.
