WHS Softball Completes Season as Bi-District Champs

Photo of Waller High School Sofball Team The Waller High School (WHS) Softball Team ended its season as bi-district champions. This was the second year in a row the team made it to playoffs, the third in WHS history. During offseason, the team worked several days a week on strength and conditioning. By the time the season began in January, they had already played four scrimmages, two tournaments, and three preseason games. Softball Coach Lise DeBruin saw improvement in the team with every week of training and every game.

“I am very proud of what my team accomplished this year,” DeBruin said. “We were not even picked to make it into the playoffs, and ended up placing second in one of the toughest 5A districts in the state.”

The team is part of District 19-5A which includes eight high schools: Brenham, Katy Paetow, College Station, A&M Consolidated, Bryan Rudder, Magnolia, and Magnolia West. To make it to playoffs they had to play against each school twice, for a total of 14 games. They handed District Champions, College Station HS, its only district loss this season. Only the top four teams advance to the playoffs. WHS Softball placed second and went on to lose to Kingwood Park 3-1 in the first round. They hold a season record of 19-9 and a District 19-5A record of 11-3.

“My goal for Waller Softball is to continue the winning tradition that has been started these last couple of years,” DeBruin said. “The kids have learned what it takes to make it into the playoffs, and my hope is that they use their first-round experience from the past two years to make it into further rounds in the future.”
