Waller ISD Participates in Farm Fresh Challenge
Did you know Waller ISD (WISD) School Nutrition Services serves local foods to students as often as possible? The district participates in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Farm Fresh Challenge to help improve students’ awareness of the vital role agriculture plays in our lives and how nutrition is key to wellness.
“It’s really important to me to serve our students high-quality foods and begin to teach them early about the farm-to-table concept,” WISD Director of School Nutrition Services said. “Quality nutrition has an impact on health and wellness, which translates to increased learning in classrooms.”
Local products served often to WISD students include milk (Borden in Conroe), bread (Kurz in Corpus Christi), sausage links (Eddy’s in Yoakum), chips (Mission in Irving), and pizza (Alpha in Waller).
Oct. 22-26, elementary students districtwide had the opportunity to sample smoothies and learn about healthy food options. During the month, elementary students also took home an educational flyer about creative ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables in daily meals.
“The students really enjoyed the samples,” Warzon said. “Participating in the Farm Fresh Challenge is a great opportunity to interact with students and share knowledge about local foods and nutrition.”
