WHS Students Medal at UIL State Competition

WHS UIL Academic TeamOnce again, Waller High School’s (WHS) UIL Academics has made history at the State UIL Spring Meet. This year, 20 students traveled to Austin to compete in the state’s most recognized academic competition and 16 of those students brought home medals. Just to qualify for state means that each of these student competitors is in the top 1.6% in the state; those who medaled are in the top .7% of academic competitors across Texas. The Current Events team (Joey Camann, Austin Davis, Blake Green, and Israel Rocha) earned first place, taking the title of State Champions in the category; this is the first UIL Academic team to become State Champions. Individually, Davis earned third in Current Events and became the second WHS student in history to medal in this event. The Spelling team (Shelbi Gorman, Steven Rabago, Avery Ragsdale, and Helmut Ulrich) earned third in the most competitively ranked class at this year's meet. Ulrich won fourth individually in the event; he has earned a place at State for three consecutive years. The Accounting team (Thanh Chiem, Lydia Jurischk, Misael Maldonado, and Jimena Ruiz) took third with Jurischk earning an individual medal for sixth place; the second in WHS UIL Accounting history. The Social Studies team (Joey Camann, Celestine Duncan, Blake Green, and Javier Porras) also won third and won the second team state-level award in this event. In Editorial Writing, Brooke Allen was the first WHS student to qualify for State in this event and won the title of Runner-Up. Only five WHS students have ever qualified for state in all years of eligibility; three of them this year: Blake Green, Helmut Ulrich, Nicholas Morris. Congratulations to WHS UIL Academics for making Bulldog history and Texas state history!
