Waller High School (WHS) is home to a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that rivals some of the best in Texas. The WHS CTE program offers students over 70 courses and 15 industry certifications in a variety of professional fields.

“Our CTE program does so much for students,” Waller ISD (WISD) CTE Coordinator Shelly Elizalde said. “I’m so proud of all they accomplish with the guidance of our outstanding teachers and support of our community.”

Part of what makes the program successful is the engagement of local professionals who serve on the district’s CTE Advisory Committee that meets twice annually to hear updates on the various programs offered and provide input on what is needed in their industries. The committee has four functions: advise, assist, support, and advocate. It is made up of representatives from Alegacy, Burckhardt Compression, Cordyne, cosmetology, Daikin Texas Technology Park, Gunderson Bookkeeping, JW Williams, Lone Star College Tomball, MD Anderson, Workforce Solutions, and Waller Economic Development Corp.

“We are so thankful to our business partners such as Daikin that have really taken an interest in helping us help our students be successful in whatever their futures hold,” Elizalde said. “We’re always looking for more partnerships to grow our programs and do more for our kids.”

In 2018, 808 WHS students earned industry certifications that helped them prepare for post-secondary education and/or the workforce. This school year (2018-19) approximately 86 percent of WHS students are enrolled in at least one CTE course.

WHS CTE currently offers courses in 16 career clusters including Agriculture/Food/Natural Resources, Architecture/Construction, Arts/Audio Visual Technology, Business Management/Administration, Finance, Education/Training, Health Science, Hospitality/Tourism, Marketing, Human Services, Information Technology, Law/Public Safety/Corrections/Security, Manufacturing, Science/Technology/Engineering/Math.
